Abbott has rolled out its new over-the-counter FreeStyle Precision Neo Blood Glucose Monitoring System. The device is being billed as one of the most affordable meters on the diabetes market, according to a Fierce Medical Devices article reports. The system costs about $40, holds 25 test strips, and features memory storage for up to 1,000 readings. It received FDA clearance in April.
Abbott officials hope that an affordable over-the-counter meter will entice reluctant would-be customers to invest in diabetes management equipment. Because the device is being offered over-the-counter, it also eliminates the spectre of insurance paperwork.
Even though an Abbott official told Insulin Nation that company officials were excited about the product’s prospects on the open market, they refused to go into specifics about the marketing plan for the meter.
