Woman Arrested For Injecting Three Kids With Insulin

A woman in Calloway County, Kentucky is being accused of injecting three young children with insulin, resulting in dangerously low blood sugars that required treatment in the emergency room. All of the children are between 5 and 10 years of age. The suspect, Heather Colson McCutcheon, is the mother of two of those children. According to Murray Police Department reports, the incident took place on April 22, 2018.

The report was filed with the local sheriff’s office after children told deputies that McCutcheon chased them around the house with a syringe. The woman had a fourth child in her care, but this child managed to evade her and was not injected. The children claimed to have yelled for help. They also reported that McCutcheon prevented them from reaching the phone or going outside.

It was not until the suspect’s brother-in-law came to the house that the children received help. The children were taken to the ER, where hospital staff determined that their blood sugars were low—in some cases, as low as 40 mg/dL. Hospital staff alerted deputies, who went to the house. By this time, McCutcheon had fled to the woods. Authorities ultimately located her at a nearby residence and arrested her.

Deputies ascertained that the suspect’s blood sugar was also low (60 mg/dL), so they took her to the ER. McCutcheon admitted that she injected herself in an effort to commit suicide.

She has been charged with three counts of second degree wanton endangerment, one count of fourth degree assault (domestic violence), two counts of fourth degree assault, third degree criminal abuse, and unlawful imprisonment.
