Best Non-medical Diabetes Advice

Insulin Nation asked individuals to share the best non-medical advice they’ve received or learned over the years. Here’s what some members of the community had to say:

  1. “Stay away from bananas. Just don’t go there.”
  2. “Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something just because you’re a diabetic. Except for the FAA. They are allowed to do that.”
  3. “Think of your blood glucose monitor as the speedometer for your car – it’s not a measure of success or failure – it’s only a piece of information you can review and use to adjust to get where you need to go.”
  4. “You don’t have to be the best at managing your diabetes. But you do want to strive for better. If it’s 0.5% better than yesterday, or 75% better than the day before…. it’s better. Don’t aim for the best, just aim for better.”
  5. “Educate everyone in your life. They may spot a low you don’t feel.”
  6. “No T1D pancreas is fully dead.”
  7. “Don’t think in terms of good/bad or success/failure when discussing blood sugar. They are just numbers. That said, it’s okay to get a little smile when you test an 80 first thing in the morning. Or a little pissed/disillusioned/cynical when the next morning it’s a 210.”
  8. “Keep calm and keto on.”
  9. “Yes, you can technically eat whatever you want and bolus for it, but you’ll pay for it sooner or later.”
  10. “You are the expert of your body. When you and your Endo conflict on treatment, just go with your gut and fib at the next appointment.”
  11. “For me, going on an anti-inflammatory diet has made a huge difference. Wish I had known about it years ago.”
  12. “A spoonful of peanut butter helps the blood sugar not go down. This is my bedtime routine.”
