Green Light Given for CGM Data-Sharing Apps

Quick Hit

The FDA has approved the marketing of Dexcom mobile apps that allow people with diabetes to automatically and securely share blood glucose readings from their continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) with caregivers and friends. In the past, such apps would need premarket clearance. These apps allow people to remotely check on the real-time blood glucose levels of people with diabetes.

Such sharing should prove popular for parents of children with Type 1, as they will be able to check up on their child’s blood glucose levels during the school day. The way it works is that data collected by the CGM can be sent to a phone app and then be shared by permission with others who have downloaded the same app on their own phones.

It remains to be seen if this will lead to better blood glucose control or just more data points to sift through.
